Council Homes Left Abandoned As Residents Were Forced Out!

The sad thing about this is that residents were forced out of buildings that were built 50 years ago, rather than restoring them! Many of these new builds have a 20 year lifespan,  and clearly this is the case here! Why not restore the buildings and use them for the homeless? What a waste!  Back in the 1970s the council built the estate of Maes Emlyn in Rhyl - with the 59 homes providing sheltered housing for residents. It was named after Emlyn Williams who had served as chairman of the Housing Committee of Rhyl for nearly 20 years up to 1965.

Sadly they were not built to last and were declared not fit for purpose in recent years. All the residents were moved out in August 2021 and the estate abandoned. Since then the estate has stood empty and the condition of the flats has continued to deteriorate as the elements take their toll. A recent video by Adam Mark Explores showed the current state of the development. There is likely no hope of saving them and at some point demolition looms. But when this will happen is another question.

At one point Denbighshire County Council - who own the estate - proposed temporary homeless accommodation at the location. This idea though was shot down by nearby residents and eventually the plan - like the homes - was abandoned.

Locally people are desperate to see something done at the eyesore estate that grows worse with every passing month. One local resident suggested: "Any places like this should be used to house homeless after they have been taught skills to bring them up to date

"Once they've been classed as skilled to do the labour required then house them but also means they have skills to look for paid employment."

On Facebook, one person said: "Sites like this should be put to tender for successful businesses to win, renovate and make use.

"The council are holding onto them with hope they get an injection of money.

"I work in housing and the current situation is absolutely abysmal and it’s a travesty that this block isn’t being utilized/renovated to create much needed housing accommodation for local families/residents. Another thought they were worth saving. They said: "Why don't they save this complex instead of leaving it to ruin. I had a friend who lived here and her flat was lovely.

"What a waste, repair and restore it as affordable housing for people.

"Stop wasting money and sort out this complex I'm sure many people would like to live there as specially the older people who may live alone. Restore it to its former glory."

But one person responded: "The only way to restore these houses is to completely knock them down and rebuild them."

Another added: "Thought they were meant to be demolished when the tenants moved out, what a waste so any empty properties in Rhyl going to ruin is a disgrace.

"There are four big houses at the top of Brighton road that I drive past every night on my way to work and they've been boarded up for years left to go to ruin, it's such a waste."

North Wales Live asked Denbighshire council where they were up to on plans to bring the land back into use at a time of housing shortage.

A spokesperson said: "A consultation about the redevelopment of the Maes Emlyn took place towards the end of last year. "Following a further review, proposals for delivering new homes on the site to help address housing need will be shared with the community in the next few months."

The development would see the current properties demolished and 35 new apartments and family homes built. From.....https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/abandoned-council-estate-left-decay-32173663
