Abergele...Councillor Paul Luckock Rejects Voters Calls For Him To Resign Following Close Schools Shock Statement!

The great thing about this is the hypocrisy! So this former sacked member of Liverpool Council who spent money they did not have and that was not part of their budget is now a Cllr in Abergele!

So how can we trust the opinions of a man who has been silent on a number of money-wasting schemes by the council, including the £250,000 for his controversial chum Cllr Wood?

If he had structured this in some way and stated that some schools are half capacity and to close one or two and explain you could say fair enough, but what about where all this overspending is coming from?

Luckock and all of the Cllrs and Staff at Conwy have all accepted a pay increase along with back pay running into the millions, yet he did not refuse to take the money neither did his cums.

And what about a staff pay freeze? The council has done this before, sell off assets, The Skip at Porth Eirias, Coed Pella, and keep Bodlonded and let staff work from home, get out of the Mochdre Building contract, cut back on Councillors and Managers, get rid of McCoubrey, there are so many options,

The public are not fools and they know the council has been wasting money, and had back pay and pay increases, and as usual, the taxpayers suffers not those that waste the money in their Ivory Towers!

So cutting public services first not staff and pay will not be well received.

The good thing will be if we do go to Bankruptcy, is that the accounts and spending will go under the microscope and they will not waste any time in exposing what has happened, Hopefully, heads will then roll.

A Conwy councillor told to resign after proposing to close schools says he will ‘humbly accept’ the will of the electorate during the next election. Pensarn Pentre Mawr councillor Paul Luckock attracted criticism at a finance scrutiny committee meeting last week when he said the authority must close and amalgamate schools to save money.

Conwy upped council tax by 9.9% last year, which was the highest rise in Wales, and slashed all services’ budgets by 10% - with even schools cut by 5%. But still the authority faces a £24.5m budget shortfall next year and expects to overspend this year by several million pounds, prompting councillors to openly talk about bankruptcy.

Cllr Paul Luckock, though, proposed spending the council’s reserves to close and amalgamate schools, claiming it would save money long-term, but this led to a row about protecting rural schools and the Welsh language. Resident and mum Karen Jones was so angered by the proposal she wrote to Conwy councillors, calling for Cllr Luckock’s resignation.

But Cllr Luckock refused to stand down and said his fate would be decided at the next election. “I have no issue with you writing to councillors encouraging them to persuade me to resign,” he said.

“I welcome robust debate and acknowledge your angst and frustration with me. As of today, no councillor has asked me to resign. I am not precious and do not take things personally. You have every right to express your opinion.” He added, “I am content for my ward electorate to judge my performance. I have robust debate with them about many things. I will humbly accept their settled will when the next election comes in May 2027.”

In her letter to Conwy councillors, Ms Jones had said: “The community deserves representatives who prioritise the well-being of all constituents and consider the broader implications of their proposals. Cllr Luckock's stance undermines these principles, and his continued presence in a position of influence may further jeopardise the interests of those he is meant to serve. I am thoroughly disgusted.”

  1. All bankruptcy would do is hand (most) decision making powers to WG Commissioners. It will not provide for a penny more in the overall WG settlement. With no local knowledge (or skin in the game) WG Commissioners will slash services across the board, ramp up council tax by 15/20% and then swan off back to Cardiff leaving dust to settle behind them. Be careful what you wish for because whatever you might think of local Cllrs, they at least know their areas, know where the priorities lie, and also know that any cuts (which are inevitable) or raising of council tax also affects them. So instead of spouting hot air all over the place might I suggest that people should lobby their Cllrs, put forward their views and concerns and suggestions and then support them in making the tough decisions before them.

    1. Sadly many people do lobby, and for the few good Cllrs, they listen but it's the corrupt one's that are the problem, and jobs for the boys. Th Town Councils are usually spot on except Abergele, I have a number of family members working for the council and the things they speak of are horrific, who's sleeping with who to move up the ladder, jobs for family members and friends, money wasted with such little regard for the tax payer, so maybe you should not accuse people of spouting hot air who have spoken up and been ignored, sometimes some of those corrupt walls are unbreakable, and if you are defending this I would say you are from Abergele town council or Pensarn!

    2. Seems someone beat me to a reply! There are some great Councillors and some bad one's, and their are some great council staff and bad one's also. For anyone to say that speaking out oversoething is hot air, despite that fact that so many of us campaign and fight for things and most of the time lose because the council takes no notice, and it then follows that people lose faith in the system, and to be honest vast amounts of people have and all at their own doing.

  2. No, I am not from nor live in Abergele and/or Pensarn, maybe you need to have a word with your 'number of family members working for the council' (your words, not mine) who by doing so are at least partly upholding the so called corrupt regime. The old adage that 'people in glass houses should not throw stones' seems very apt here.

    1. Odd that you can condem people with opinions about the council without knowing the facts, and maybe people with one sided biases like yourself are part of the problem of mistrust. In no way shape or form can any organization like a council be deemed squeaky clean, unless someone is in denial or looking through rose coloured glasses, but thank you for your comment
