Llandudno...Residents Bemoan FlyTipped Rubbish On The Orme!

So the poor residents of the Orme are upset by Fly Tipping! What planet do these people live on? Firstly Fly Tipping has been going on for years up there, not long ago a lorry load of old tyres was dumped up there!

This is the real world FlyTipping goes on everywhere, rich or poor and the Orme is covered in litter and drug needles as well as dog mess.

If it was made easier and cheaper to get rid of rubbish this would not happen but the recycling centers are like jail wardens forcing people to rip open bags, or charging non-business people for taking DIY materials to the tip!

No wonder people dump rubbish.

And the Irony of it is if you dump it the council will take it all away, but they won't take things in the bins and also things like fridges are difficult to get rid of as scrap collectors don't want them.

One of the best known landmarks in North Wales has been hit by the scourge of fly-tipping. Residents in the Conwy seaside resort of Llandudno were left shocked and appalled by the use of the Great Orme as a dumping ground for litter.

Piles of beige carpets were scattered along a hillside section around 100 metres from the Blair Gow Shelter on Marine Drive overlooking the West Shore. They appeared to have been thrown over a stone wall lining the headland toll road around what is one of the region’s most scenic spots.

The area lies above Llys Helig Drive, known locally as “Millionaires Row” due to its expensive houses. The dumped carpets were spotted by walkers on Monday, February 12, and are not thought to have been there for long.

When a video clip was shared on a local Facebook group, it brought immediate and widespread condemnation. “Absolute disgusting behaviour,” commented a local man. Another resident said: “What is wrong with some people?” One woman wondered: “How on earth did they get it up there? Horrendous.”

Fly-tipping hit the headlines this week when a farmer barricaded two van drivers who’d dumped large piles of rubbish on his land in Warwickshire. Adam Beaty caught them in the act and blocked the vehicles until police arrived.

Across Wales, fly-tipping incidents fell 4% in 2023 as local authorities cracked down on the crime, particularly in the south of the country. Fly-tipping Action Wales (FAW) registered 39,853 incidents last year compared to 41,333 in 2022.

However FAW is continuing to see “huge numbers of online scammers”. Often dubbed “Facebook fly-tippers”, these carriers pose as legitimate waste removers only to illegally dump their waste.

Fly-tipping clear-ups cost Welsh taxpayers an estimated £1.83 million each year, with household waste making up 70% of fly-tips. Private landowners are often saddled with the cost but responsibility for the Great Orme clear-up is unclear.

Although fly-tipping is unusual on the Great Orme, it does take place. On February 4, a resident reported fencing and parts of a shed dumped in a hedgerow on Ty Gwyn Road. The waste was removed by the council last week.

Conwy Council spokesperson said: "There is no excuse for fly-tipping and local residents should not have to tolerate this type of behaviour by a small minority of irresponsible people who break the law. Cleaning up fly-tipping costs us all money; it’s illegal, dangerous and potentially harmful to health; it spoils our enjoyment of the surroundings and can cause serious pollution of the environment.

"It’s free for residents to take most items, including carpets, to Household Recycling Centres for disposal The centres are open every day of the year except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day and it’s easy to make an appointment on the council website or on the phone."

The Great Orme fly-tipping left local people incredulous that anyone would want to besmirch such an iconic location. “For people not to appreciate such a beautiful place is beyond me,” said one

Stopping fly-tipping

If you pay someone to remove waste from your home or business, check that the person or company who’s taking the waste away is a Registered Waste Carrier on the Natural Resources Wales website. Always ask for a detailed receipt.

Conwy Council advises people to "discreetly" note the following details if they see someone fly-tipping, or come across fly-tipped waste:

  • The date, time and the place where the tipping is taking place, or has occurred.
  • What the waste is and how much of it there is.
  • A description of any vehicles involved and the registration number.

Then contact Conwy Council on 01492 575337 or report it online at erf.reporting.conwy.gov.uk and send any photos that have been taken.

  1. The Mochdre recycling site is run like a military prisoner camp, I have seen them bully older people to open bin bags and go through them, and even if you have a van but use it for your own waste to take to the skip, they will charge you no matter what you say, I understand why people fly-tip, at least by doing this the council have to clear it up and take it away.
