The Issue

Living in the beautiful county of Conwy, Wales, has always brought us pride and joy. However, the recent proposal to raise council tax by 12.5% is nothing short of alarming. This would impose an even greater financial burden on us, the residents, who already endure the highest council tax rates in all of Wales.

For many of us, it has become unaffordable. School year groups are being merged as school funding is reduced, critical services are reduced, and yet, we're expected to pay more into a system that seems to offer less in return. The local government prioritizes expenditures on buildings that are not fit for purpose, and councillors continue to receive significant pay hikes. 

In a time when people are increasingly facing poverty and turning to food banks for survival, such fiscal demands are unjust and inequitable. Every family in Conwy is affected by this. We struggle to cover basic living costs, and this tax rise only deepens the financial strain.

We understand the necessity for funds to facilitate community improvements, but it's time our local government engages in more responsible and transparent spending. Money should be channeled effectively to where it serves the community best — in improving schools, maintaining essential services, and ensuring that every penny is accounted for.

We must make our voices heard and demand a reevaluation of this proposed tax hike. Let us remind our representatives that their decisions should reflect the needs and capabilities of their constituents.
