What wonderful news greets the residents of Conwy County as McCoubrey announces his reign of terror will soon be coming to an end with his resignation!
This man allowed staff wage increases including his own that ran into millions along with backpay, despite the council falling into debt! A previous Leader froze all wage increases until the council was in a better fiancial place, not our McCoubrey!
He also failed to discipline out of control Councillors! And chums of his!
He failled to support our heritage campaigns, and so much more, glad he is going and good riddance, but I wonder where he will pop up next?
The leader of Conwy County Council will step down from his role next month. Abergele councillor Charlie McCoubrey, the leader of the Conwy First Independent Group, made the council's other 55 councillors aware of his decision yesterday evening.
Cllr McCoubrey became the council's leader in May 2021, replacing former leader Sam Rowlands, who is now a Senedd Member. A spokeswoman for Conwy County Borough Council said: “The leader, Cllr Charlie McCoubrey, announced yesterday (23 September) that he intends to stand down from the role at a special council meeting on the 8 October 2025.
“Council will now start the process to elect a new leader in accordance with established procedures.”
Cllr McCoubrey, a retired dentist and a former promising junior boxer, had long campaigned against the Welsh Government formula used to calculate how much money Conwy is given as part of its annual local government settlement.
The leader has repeatedly pointed out how much worse off Conwy is per head of the population compared to South Wales councils and neighbouring authorities, Gwynedd and Denbighshire.
Whilst Cllr McCoubrey is yet to give a reason for his departure, he has again taken the opportunity to criticise Welsh Government for “underfunding” the council.
“It has been a huge privilege and an honour to serve as leader of CCBC since 2021, and I would like to record my sincere thanks to all my elected colleagues for putting their faith in me,” said Cllr McCoubrey.
“I have done my best to highlight the chronic underfunding of local government in the face of rising demand at both a local and national level, resulting in an ever-increasing burden placed on council tax payers.
"Despite these pressures, I am very proud of the continuing efforts our officers make to provide essential services to our communities, especially our most vulnerable and frail.”
He added: “I would also like to thank my cabinet colleagues for all their help and support, and I look forward to continuing to work in my council ward and supporting the new administration.” The Welsh Government was contacted for a comment.

A great shame - he did a good job in difficult circumstances - I wish him well.
