Amazing News! Reform secures 'sensational' Anglesey by-election win in Plaid's 'back yard'

This really is wonderful news, Plaid, Labour and the Conservatives have done nothing for our country, so its about time we had a new party to at least try and halt this countries decline!

Reform UK has won its first seat on Anglesey Council with a stunning by-election victory. Party candidate Celfyn Furlong smashed Thursday’s poll, collecting almost 60% more votes than Plaid Cymru candidate Bethan Jones to represent the island’s Ynys Gybi ward.

It’s the latest in a series of by-election gains in Wales for Nigel Farage’s party. Last night’s result underlines expectations that May’s Senedd elections will be a two-horse race between Reform and Plaid.

Dan Thomas, newly installed leader of Reform Wales, said it was a “sensational victory” for the party. With Anglesey represented by Plaid in the UK and Welsh parliaments, he was delighted to lay down a marker in the party’s “back yard”.

“It shows that we can win absolutely anywhere here in Wales,” he said. “From the former Labour heartlands to the former Plaid heartlands, we are fighting for every single vote so we can deliver the change Wales desperately needs.”

The by-election was triggered by the death of long-serving councillor and former FAW president Trefor Lloyd Hughes in November at the age of 77.

Plaid Cymru now has 19 seats on Anglesey Council, with 11 independent councillors, three Labour councillors and one each from the Liberal Democrats and Reform UK.

Ynys Gybi (Holy Island) is also represented by county councillors Keith Roberts (Labour) and Dafydd Rhys Thomas (Independent).Writing online, Celfyn Furlong paid tribute to the late Trefor Lloyd Hughes, saying he was a “talisman that will never be forgotten”.

He added: “I am absolutely humbled and honoured to have been elected to represent Ynys Gybi. This result sends a clear message. People want change, and people want common sense back in local politics.

“Now the real work begins. Ynys Gybi voted Reform. Ynys Gybi will have Reform.” Get the best island stories from our Anglesey newsletter - sent every Friday
