Colwyn Bay ....Suspects identified after Terry Jones statue vandalised

They will attack this statue again, gangs of youths hang down there every night, and this statue is so flimsy, they will be attrackted to it.

TWO suspects have been identified in connection with damage to a newly unveiled statue of Terry Jones in Colwyn Bay.

The bronze sculpture, which depicts Jones as Monty Python’s Nude Organist and acts as a permanent tribute to the late comedian, was unveiled at a celebratory event on Colwyn Bay promenade just weeks ago by Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam on April 25.

However, vandalism has seen two door knockers, which referenced animated characters from fantasy film Labyrinth, for which Jones wrote the screenplay, pulled off.

Police inquiries into the incident have led to two people being interviewed by Officers.

A statement from North Wales Police said: "Two suspects have been identified in connection with damage to a newly unveiled statue of Terry Jones in Colwyn Bay.

"Police enquiries into the incident led to two local people being interviewed by officers on Friday May 22.

"A joint investigation with Conwy Council is ongoing."

The bronze memorial, named A Python on the Prom, was sculpted by Llandudno artist Nick Elphick.

Mr Elphick said it was a "very, very sad" case of "slight vandalism" and that he was "a bit upset" that such a treasured memorial would be treated this way.

He said: “Bit upset, can’t believe it really, I’m actually gutted.

“But just to let everyone know, there are CCTV cameras completely on it. So whoever’s done it, will be seen.”

He added that the damaged parts had been recovered by members of the public and that he hoped the damage would be repaired.
